Deliciously cheesy 80s kung fu. I can't believe I was six years old when this was made. Halfway through the video when David Carradine begins the instruction, he's so serious it's creepy. The way he describes it with that blank stare into the video camera is so disturbing, and ridiculous at the same time- especially in that space war outfit!!!

Oh Debbie Drake, you're so good at making it seem so easy and relaxing! I can just picture all the housewives in their own 50s living rooms getting motivated to get fit in between all those household chores and juggling children and husbands. I especially like the calf/duck movement, along with that classy collar attached to Debbie's leotard.

The musical accompaniment to this is just fabulous- it hits the movements right on. I just discovered Jack Lalanne- he's great!! Quirky, straightforward and as he admits himself, quite talkative. I'm on a new kick of looking at fitness from the 50s and 60s. More to come!!

I had my first swim at the historic Intramural Sports Building at the University of Michigan, and was so inspired by the grandiose feeling of the building and maze of bricked hallways that when I got home I searched for further information about the history of the building and its activities. I am still searching for more info, but I did discover these lovely photos through the University of Michigan Bentley Historical Library. Each picture was taken in approximately 1890/1900. The first is the Women's fitness class, and the second the Men's, both taken at the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan. Not necessarily related to the Intramural Sports Building, but certainly of interest. I also learned that the Intramural Sports Building, when first open, was only for men. Must learn more!!!
